Gateway Tile first opened its doors in 1982, over 40 years ago now by Martyn and Linda knight, and has grown steadily to become one of the major bathroom and tile centres in the South West.

During the recession in the 80s most tile companies were keeping stocks low, so Martyn decided to do the opposite and started importing slate from abroad and rented more warehouse space to keep it all in, it was then that Gateway really began to grow, so we then had to move to bigger premises.

The next big venture was to start importing from Spain and Italy and to start distribution the tiles across Devon and Cornwall to other tile and bathroom showrooms. But to be able to show off all the tiles we had to move across the road and use the old showroom as more storage, and again we outgrew the showroom so then had to take over the property next door, then we took over the upstairs to be able to show even more great displays of tiles and bathrooms.

The showrooms at the entrance to Newport Industrial Estate may be hidden away, but are well worth seeking out on the bank of the beautiful river Kensey in and old tannery building.

The building use to have a water wheel on the back which unfortunately burnt down in a fire but the showroom has a drawing of what it looked liked at the time on display.

The showrooms are original and quirky with parking outside.
With the emphasis on quality, style and prices, the reputation of Gateway has grown steadily over the years to the current position, where we keep massive stocks of tiles and have a unique bathroom showroom in one of the 4 big showrooms (it is a bit like a Tardis inside).

When questioned about the success of Gateway, the owners (who are now the daughters!) Joanna Catling and Tammy Nutley, stress the importance of trained and knowledgeable staff and a dedication to giving the best possible service at the lowest possible prices.

When we were young the school holidays normally meant going to work with dad and helping out, with big sister Veronica, and this has given us so much knowledge that we like to pass on where we can. Couple this with a unique showroom with stunning displays, and everything priced fairly with no hidden costs and you have the recipe for Gateway’s success.
